Membership of the Mary Glasgo Language Trust

The Trustees are appointed to represent a wide range of expertise and experience:

Edwin Glasgow is the Chairman of the Trust, and nephew of Mary Glasgow. He is a Queen’s Counsel, with a particular interest in legal education. He is a Fellow of University College, London and a visiting examiner at the Ecole de Formation Professionnelle des Barreaux. He practises and teaches law and advocacy in many countries and is Chairman of the Advocacy Training Council.  

Janet Glasgow is Honorary Treasurer of the Trust. She has experience in primary education.

Paddy Carpenter was a languages teacher in East London and then a local authority modern language adviser. As deputy director at the Central Bureau for Educational Visits and Exchanges, he was responsible for the Foreign Language Assistants scheme and for developing courses abroad for language teachers. Seconded to the EU Commission in Brussels, he helped to write and launch EU action programmes such as Lingua and Comenius. He is now retired but continues to evaluate programmes for the EU, particularly in the field of languages and culture.  He was appointed a Commandeur des Palmes Académiques by the French Ministry of National Education, and was awarded the Ordre de la Couronne by Belgium.

Rachel Hawkes is Assistant Principal and Director of Language College at Comberton Village College, Cambridgeshire.  A classroom teacher of French, German and Spanish, she is also currently an Advanced Skills Teacher (AST), a Specialist Schools and Academies Trust Advanced Lead Practitioner for languages and a Regional Support Advisor for the new secondary curriculum.  She has an interest in all aspects of language pedagogy, particularly teacher and learner talk in the classroom, use of ICT in modern languages, cross-curriculum links and skills-based teaching.

Tony Hein taught English and French at a leading London independent school where he was also Assistant Headmaster. Alongside his teaching career he has also been chairman of two companies selecting and shipping high quality French wines, and was a wine consultant to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden for a number of years. He was made a Chevalier du Tastevin in 1999 for services to the wine industry in the Roussillon.

Ann King has worked as a French and Latin teacher, head of languages, deputy head and vice-principal. She led the first national pilot scheme in a comprehensive school of Section Bilingue teaching (an earlier form of CLIL), with her pupils successfully taking public examinations in Geography and History, written in French.  She has written languages and careers publications for CILT, and has undertaken modern languages advisory work in a number of Local Authorities, including training primary French teachers. She was an Ofsted inspector for 10 years, specialising in modern languages and classics. She was made a Chevalier des Palmes Académiques by the French Ministry of National Education in 1988.

Alwena Lamping’s experience of working with languages is wide-ranging and includes interpreting for the police, presenting a series on BBC Radio Wales and international development projects as well as a range of posts in education. She has publications in several languages to her name and is currently writing and editing for the successful BBC Talk series, of which she is Series Editor.  Alwena was a member of the Nuffield Languages Inquiry and of the Languages National Steering Group set up by the government to develop a national strategy for languages.  She recently evaluated the progress of the national strategy for languages in Wales.

Alan Moys has spent the whole of his career in languages education, with teaching experience in schools, further education and teacher training. He also served as a local authority languages adviser, before moving to CILT as Deputy Director and then as Director. He retired from CILT in 1992 to continue his work as a writer and a schools inspector, becoming Chairman and then President of the National Association of Language Advisers (NALA). At the invitation of the Nuffield Foundation, he returned to full-time engagement from 1998-2000 as Secretary to the Nuffield Languages Inquiry. He was appointed an Officier des Palmes Académiques by the French Ministry of National Education.

Glenis Shaw has been involved in modern language teaching for over 30 years. She was advisory teacher for modern languages in two London Boroughs before becoming a Language Teaching Adviser at CILT. During her time at CILT she organised the content of many courses and conferences, worked on a project to support specialist Language Colleges from their inception and edited two books on teaching A level. Glenis was also one of the researchers and authors of "The Invisible Child". Recently retired as Deputy Head and Head of Modern Languages in an inner city comprehensive in London, she now teaches part time and acts as leading teacher for MFL in the Borough of Southwark, south London.

 Kathy Wicksteed is the National Subject Lead for languages for the DCSF/CfBT programme of support for the new secondary curriculum, working with the Association for Language Learning (ALL). Kathy is a former President of ALL and has worked as a French and Italian teacher, head of languages, local authority inspector and head of programme at the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust. She was a member of the Nuffield Languages Inquiry and has a particular interest in CLIL (content and language integrated learning) and in language learning in plurilingual contexts.     

 

 

Alongside the Mary Glasgow Award, a major programme of annual Mary Glasgow 14-19 Curriculum Prizes was formally launched at the European Awards ceremony in Edinburgh on 26 September 2006, with the first £5000 presentation made in November 2007 at the European Awards ceremony in Cardiff.

In March 2006, the Nuffield Foundation generously agreed to support the  Mary Glasgow 14-19 Prize with a grant of £39,800 for the whole 3 year programme. In 2007, the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation agreed a generous grant of £20,000.
