The Mary Glasgow Trust firmly believes that languages are an essential component of the education of our young people, both for our economic future and for the fostering of international and social understanding.
In 2006 we therefore decided to do something positive to encourage and celebrate new approaches to language learning in the 14-19 curriculum, with the aim of stimulating imaginative curricular and policy development for the 14-19 sector, particularly at a time when the curriculum for this age group is undergoing radical change.
The result of this has been a major programme of £5000 prizes – up to 4 in any one year – for innovation in the curriculum for this age group. We are extremely fortunate to have been supported financially in this initiative by both the Nuffield Foundation and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
We have two key objectives for the Mary Glasgow 14-19 Curriculum Prizes: first, to reward those schools and colleges which are doing new and successful things with language teaching; and secondly – and this is very important – to bring their projects to national attention so that others may be inspired, and benefit from their example. For this reason, we want our winners to make their ideas and resources more widely available to others – on the Net, or by other means.
On the next pages you can find out about the previous winners we have had so far, in 2007 and 2008.
